Thoughts on Veterans? Day
They leave home with excitement in their breast beating,
A journey into adulthood of grand adventure dreaming.
A band of brothers soon they will be.
Standing proud and tall, fearless and free.
With a grin, gung-ho, a slap on the back,
Buddies for life; they charge into combat;
They kill and on the adrenaline edge they?re alive.
And mourn those who yet did not survive.
Hard eyed, tight jawed they return old men,
And in their dreams fight the battles again.
The wives, sweethearts, family and friends who remain
At home also serve who stand and wait; their love sustains.
The placard waving crowd shares too in freedom?s light,
But those who serve the flag know what they do is right.
And those who learn war but love peace
Ask for their ultimate sacrifice
Not that God be on their side,
But that they be on God?s.

Veterans Day to me is one of the most significant and memorable days of the year. Veterans Day to me is one of the most significant and memorable days of the year. It causes me to pause and reflect on my own service time, my buddies whom I miss all the time, my family's collection of Veterans, and thanking all those who have ever served to protect this country. Veterans day this year is even more significant when we have young men and women on the line fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and other remote regions of the world. An entire new generation of Veterans is coming up through the hard fought wages of war. Veterans day to them will mean as much if not more than it does to us... for their world, their time, their wars are truly global in nature. God bless them all. God bless all who have served and shall serve in the future.

Veterans Day is a time for me to recognize this sacrifice.I appreciate this opportunity to share these thoughts. As I walked my dog in the hills above my home this morning, enjoying the emerging sunrise and a fresh, crisp desert breeze on my face, I began to think about our military personnel stationed in combative positions overseas. I wondered what these brave men and women were thinking each day as they too watched the sunrise and possibly with a fair breeze also. Certainly, their husbands, wives, children, homes and life experiences are foremost in their minds as they ready themselves for another day that, for some, may be their last. Unknowing, dedicated to their duty, they proceed, as countless thousands of Americans have before them. It is a noble sacrifice that, in my opinion, demands our sincerest respect, thanks, and admiration. Veterans Day is a time for me to recognize this sacrifice. It is shamefully ignorant that so many Americans take the freedoms that have been earned through the hard fought, bloody sacrifices of our military for granted. If you encounter a Veteran at any time, please offer your thanks. I certainly will!

I have a new outlook on my country, the military and the man who is standing in the gap with me, believing my boys will make a difference there and come home safelyI never would have guessed my boys would join the military. I can remember Lance having dreams of being a surgeon, then as he got older he wanted to be in Law enforcement. When he developed and grew spiritually he started writing gospel music and God gifted him playing the keyboard and yes, he is gifted to sing also.
His older brother Levi decided in June 2003 he would join the national guards,it wasn't long...July 2003 I found myself signing the dotted line for my 17 yr old son Lance who wanted to be just like the guy he admires, his brother Levi.
Levi left for Iraq in march of 04 and Lance was soon to follow, he graduated high school from ERHS,Ramseur,NC and the day after graduation I was putting my baby boy who had received a scholarship to pfeiffer university on a plane to fight for his country. Devastated but committed and walking in their purpose, the boys have grown up so quickly from what we all thought they would be and do in life. They are both walking in Grandpa's(deceased-Robert Crommett) footsteps serving our country.
I have been "stretched" and now walking in a whole different level of faith in God. It is His divine purpose for us to serve others and this is exactly what my two babys who are now men are doing. I have a new outlook on my country, the military and the man who is standing in the gap with me, believing my boys will make a difference there and come home safely...THANK YOU PRESIDENT BUSH,I have faith in what you are doing.
Thank you and God Bless all who serve and fight for our freedom,
Shilo Crommett
